What to Bring to a Networking Event

June 2, 2025

Introduction

Networking can open doors — but only if you’re ready to walk through them. Whether you’re attending your first Friday Club breakfast or your fiftieth, showing up with the right tools and mindset can make all the difference.

“When you show up prepared, people show up for you.” – Sindy Snow

Here’s your ultimate Friday Club checklist to make every networking session impactful.

1. The Right Mindset

Before anything else, bring positive energy. Be open, generous, and ready to connect.
Tip: Remember founder Allan Hammond’s motto:

“Get Up. Dress Up. Show Up.”

2. Your 30-Second Elevator Pitch

Keep it short, specific, and powerful:

  • Who you are – Name, company, title
  • What you do – The service/value you offer
  • What you’re looking for – Leads, partners, clients?

 Example:
“Hi, I’m Zanele from Spark Branding. We help SMEs tell their story visually. I’m looking to meet PR firms and coaches needing brand support.”

Pro Tip: Practice out loud before the event.

3. Business Cards – Digital & Physical

Don’t be forgettable. Make it easy for others to follow up.

  • Use printed cards with clean design
  • Create a digital card using HiHello, Linktree, or Tapni

Bonus: Add a QR code linking to your website or Instagram.

 4. Note-Taking Tools

Bring a notebook or use your phone to capture:

  • Key names & business info
  • Topics to follow up on
  • Any leads or offers shared

Being the person who remembers wins respect.

 5. A Fully Charged Phone

It’s your modern-day networking Swiss army knife.

  • Connect on LinkedIn instantly
  • RSVP or check schedules
  • Capture notes or share links

Don’t forget your charger or power bank.

6. Promo Material or Lead Magnet

Want to stand out?

  • Bring a flyer, QR code or brochure
  • Offer something helpful: “Free checklist” or “Free consult link”

This creates instant value and starts the relationship.

 7. Dress to Connect

First impressions matter.

  • Aim for smart casual with personality
  • Look like someone people want to do business with

What you wear should say “approachable professional.”

8. Have a Goal in Mind

Get intentional before the meeting:

  • Talk to 3 new people
  • Book 2 follow-up coffee chats
  • Offer 1 referral or intro to someone else

If you don’t set a goal, you’ll miss the win.

 9. Come to Give, Not Just Get

The best connectors offer value first.

  • Share a helpful tool or article
  • Introduce someone to a contact
  • Recommend a member’s service

Generosity builds trust. Trust builds business.

10. Follow Up Promptly

Send a message or email within 24–48 hours:

“Hey Thabo, great connecting today. Here’s that link I promised. Let’s grab coffee next week?”

This is where the real magic happens.

Final Word

Networking is a skill. Like any skill, it improves with preparation. At Friday Club, we give you the platform — all you need to do is show up prepared and open to possibility.
